Pastor: Rev. Frances Preston
September greetings St. Andrew’s family and friends!
As the summer “season” winds down, I am reminded that summer doesn’t actually end until later in September, and end of summer can be the most beautiful of all, with clear blue skies, cooler nights and warmer ocean (and less local traffic!). Throughout the past weeks, I’ve heard from many of you that this summer was too hot, even to go to the beach, and you are ready for autumn to come. Here at St. Andrew’s we are celebrating a Season of Creation in worship on Sundays in September. JOIN US! And bring a friend, neighbor or co-worker. Come to reaffirm our relationship to God as we celebrate God’s gifts to us in Planet Earth.
I’m eagerly anticipating seeing you all in worship and fellowship and mission as the program year begins. Check out the rest of the newsletter for the many opportunities for fellowship, study, spiritual growth and mission/service. If you have a mission project you’d like to get started, please let me know.
If you are unable to be with us on Sundays and would like to hear the worship service, please let the office know; Bill McKelvey very faithfully records the service and makes CD’s available the following week. St. Andrew’s is only as far away as a CD player!
I’m blessed to be serving alongside you. May God continue to bless each of you, St. Andrew’s and our ministry together.
In faith, Francie
Spiritual Growth Opportunities for all ages through Study
Disciple: Becoming Disciples through Bible Study: Would you like to know more about the Bible, but haven’t figured out how to do it alone? It’s meant to be studied with others, and to make connections to your life! Join thousands of beginners and experienced readers around the world who gather and are transformed in small groups of 8-15 people who explore 80% of the Bible from September to May. It’s an experience you will not regret, as you grow as biblically informed and transformed disciples in Jesus Christ. Come to an information meeting following worship, Sunday, September 16th. Or you may speak to a disciple graduate, June Coles, Bernice Natiello, Betty Rushton, Gaylen Nolan, Jackie Capestro, John Jankowski, Michele Neiberlien, Tom Fulton, Peggy Fulton or Pastor Francie. And if you are a disciple graduate, please come to the meeting to share your experience and we’ll begin discussion of your next step.
NEW! Christian Believer: Connecting our faith with our daily lives: Would you like to know about the teachings and beliefs of Christianity, and how they are connected to our worship and daily lives as Christians? This is a thirty week study that will equip you and our church for living faithfully through writings of the Bible, the early and more modern church writings. Join Pastor Francie at coffee hour on September 16, or contact me to learn more about this study which will begin in September and end in May. No pre-requisites.
Children grades K-8 meet for Sunday School beginning in worship with parents, then go to classrooms with teachers after the Children’s Message and until worship ends. Ages Pre-school meet with Jen Robbins downstairs in Wesley Hall before worship and should be picked up following worship.
Nursery Care is available for infants—age 2 during worship.
Confirmation Class: We hope to have a confirmation class this year, all students associated with the church who are 7th grade or older… Help get the word to those who might not know—7th – 12th graders who have not been confirmed are invited and encouraged to join this group. We’ll begin in October, with an information meeting for parents and youth, Sunday October 7 during coffee hour – get your beverage and a snack and meet with Pastor Francie.
Youth: Let’s begin to meet again on September 23th from 10:45-11:30, in Wesley Hall. All youth 7th grade and older, invite your friends. Call each other, text or whatever, and be there! September 16th we’ll be in the food pantry 11-1.
Women’s’ Covenant Group will resume Monday September 17, 4-5 PM in the Woodfield Room. Bring a friend.
Walk to Emmaus Spiritual Weekend (you don’t walk, it’s a spiritual journey): A transforming experience of Christian love, this weekend retreat is designed for you who have a desire to grow closer to God and want to grow in your faith. You will enjoy three days singing, learning, laughing, worshipping, reflecting, praying and participating in loving small groups. Luke 24:13-35 relates the story of two disciples of Jesus walking along the road when Jesus joined them, taught them, and was made known in the breaking of bread. Men’s Walk is scheduled for November 1-4; Women’s Walk is November 8-11 (Registration deadlines are early in October). More information at www.swte.org. If you are at all interested in exploring this, please speak with Gaylen Nolan, June Coles, Eleanor McClymont, Karin Goodman, Jackie Capestro, Chip Craig, or Francie
Spiritual Growth Opportunities through Mission and Service:
St. Andrew’s Food Pantry is in need of food donations. Bring your non-perishable healthy food to the narthex in the rear of the sanctuary, or hallway near the choir room. We have regulars coming in each month and they Thank you! Our pantry can use the following items: Toiletries (trial & full size), peanut butter, jelly, dried potatoes, dry milk, crackers, detergent (dish & laundry), juices, snacks and canned vegetables (green and non-green).
Belmar Soup Kitchen is Saturday, October 27th, Volunteers needed, contact Pat Keller or the church office.
Worship Participants, all ages: If you would like to be a greeter before worship, an usher before and during worship, or a reader during worship, or outside of worship do “pew maintenance” or other assistance, OR if you are a youth or child grade 4 or older and would like to be an acolyte, please contact Pastor Francie or the church office. We would like YOU to be involved in the worship experience.
Phone Cards THANK YOU to Ray Miller and all who have supported our troops through phone cards. Ray collects money and/or AT&T (international) phone cards to send to our troops overseas through UM Chaplain Jack serving in the desert and in 130 degree heat. For every $10 he collects, a soldier receives a 150-minute phone card to stay connected with family and friends. In September due to your generosity he sent 32. For more information, contact Ray or the church office.
Falltastic Fair/Meals for The Center: The Sunday School will once again sponsor a fun-filled Fall Festival for ALL AGES on October 28, 5:30-7. In addition to fun, food, fellowship for all ages, fall-crafts for the children, we will once again package and label food for The Center in Asbury Park. Bring your family, friends and neighbors, along with plenty of meat, fish or poultry, vegetable or starch, no casseroles, THEN we’ll package up the “loaves and fishes left-overs” into over 100 boxed meals for local HIV-AIDS patients. Mark your calendar and BE THERE! Questions? Contact Michele Neiberlien, Val Crossman or the church office at 449-5147.
Annual Fall Rummage Sale is planned for September 21st & September 22nd. This is your chance to get rid of all those clothes in your closets that you no longer wear. Then you’ll have room for some new clothes for fall. While you’re at it, you can also donate stuff (lamps, small appliances, dishes etc.) you no longer want. Small appliances should work. Clothing items should be worthy of resale. The exception would be blankets etc. that we can donate to the animal shelter for bedding. It’s a win-win plan: clean your closets and help the UMW raise money for mission and give your unwanted items another life.
We are now accepting donations. Your items can be dropped off in Wesley Hall and placed on the tables under the windows. The Hall is open most weekdays until 12:30 because of nursery school.
Plan to help sort on September 19th & 20th and or sell on September 21st & September 22nd. We’ll also need help cleaning up on Saturday, September 22nd from noon until 2 pm. It’s work, but it’s fun too and you meet the nicest people. If you have any questions contact Betty Rushton.
May God’s grace be upon this shawl… warming, comforting, enfolding and embracing. May this mantle be a safe haven, a sacred place of security and well-being… sustaining and embracing in good times as well as difficult ones. May the one who receives this shawl be cradled in hope, kept in joy, graced with peace, and wrapped in love.
(Prayer of Blessing for this Shawl, by Janet Bristow)
The powerful healing of a prayer shawl is expressed in this blessing. So many people feel the presence of God’s arms wrapped around them, and the prayers of this congregation as they have been knit or crocheted into each stitch. If you know someone who could benefit from the “physical arms of God” around them in a time of grief, illness, loss, or in a time of celebration, please let Pastor Francie know. We are all in gratitude for those who lovingly make the shawls and gather for sustaining fellowship once a month. Won’t you consider joining this group?
Member Care hopes you enjoyed your summer break before the fall routines reappear. Even though summer may give you a chance to slow down, unwind and relax a little, the work of our committee continues. We are always ready to reach out to our church family with our prayers, cards and meals. You can help Member Care stay involved and informed with the joys and concerns of our church family. Do you know someone in our congregation celebrating a special birthday, anniversary or event in their life? Do you have child who has achieved a special goal? Member Care continues to recognize and acknowledge these important milestones in our church family. Do you know someone facing a difficult challenge that you believe could use a note of encouragement and support? Member Care remembers and lifts up in prayer all who receive a card from our committee.
Member Care will also coordinate meals for someone coming home from a hospital stay. Please let us know if you would be willing to add your name to our list of meal makers. It is only with your help that we are able to provide this service. Thank you to all who have answered “Yes!” to our requests for help. If you are thinking of getting more involved with the church and are considering joining a committee we would love to have you. Many hands make light the work so please join us. There are not a lot of meetings involved, just reaching out to our church family.
“Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, who are many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given us….” Romans 12:4-6
We are here to answer the call, please let us be of help in your time of need. God loves you, and we love you too. The committee warmly invites you to be part of this ministry, please contact Dee Dee Fabry or Pastor Francie.
Spiritual Growth through Fellowship
Coffee Hour Fellowship after worship will begin Sunday, September 16 in the Blakeman Room. We need YOU (those of you who enjoy week to week not only the fellowship and the coffee, but the baked goods that go with it), to sign up to bring something and clean up afterward. It does not need to be elaborate, just something nice to go with the coffee and tea! Sign up sheets will be posted this week or next… Please support this ministry of hospitality! For more information please contact the church office.

2012 Church/Charge Conference– save the date! Our annual Charge Conference is scheduled for 7:30 PM, Thursday, November 8, 2012. This is a celebration of ministry – open to all who worship at St. Andrew’s . If you/your committee have reports, please turn them into the office by October 29. Please mark your calendar now and plan to join us as we celebrate the ministries of St. Andrew’s UMC this past year and look toward 2013.
Saturday Soup: THANK YOU to Barbara DeLuca and her team of unpaid servants who shopped for, prepared and served 200+ meals to the Saturday Soup mission in Asbury Park. We thank all of you for your faithfulness to this important outreach ministry; you showed our poor neighbors that God’s love and care is constant.
The Finance Committee thanks all of you who kept current with your financial commitment to St. Andrew’s through the summer. More and more of you have arranged for a check to be sent automatically from your bank; your regular giving helps you be faithful and helps St. Andrew’s pay its bills while summer worship attendance is lighter. We still come into September a little light on revenues, so please update your commitment as possible so we can continue to fund ministry this fall.
A Big Thank you to all who have contributed to the Air Conditioner Installation. Everyday Sunday this summer it was a blessing!
